Repeat state champs: Wallace-Rose Hill wins 1-AA football state title
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (COURTESY DEANA KING MAXPREPS) — Wallace Rose-Hill took advantage of several Mitchell turnovers and the running of Johnny Glaspie to take a 48-28 win the NCHSAA 1AA state championship.
The Bulldogs (15-1) defending their 2014 championship from a year ago. They took advantage of 2 Mountaineer turnovers to take an early 14-0 lead. Glaspie was the workhorse on those drives by scoring one of his 5 touchdowns of the day.
Mitchell (14-2) did cut the lead to 14-6 on quarterback Ben Young’s 27-yard touchdown to Tre Carson, but the Bulldogs answered right back with Glaspie’s second touchdown to make it 21-6.
In the second quarter, Mitchell took advantage of a Bulldog turnover as Caleb Street picked up the ball and raced 61-yards for the score to trim the lead to 21-13. The Bulldogs tacked on a field goal to take a 24-13 halftime lead.
Mitchell would hang tough in the game and close within 10 points at 38-28, but could not get any closer. Wallace-Rose Hill was aided by Glaspie’s 3 second half touchdown runs to seal a 48-28 win.
The Bulldogs were led by Glaspie who ran 25 times for 261 yards and 5 TDs. Jhonta Wilson added 16 carries for 117 yards. Defensively, Javonte Williams had 14 tackles and Desmond Newkirk had 8 tackles.
The Mountaineers were led by Young, who ran 15 times for 78 yards and completed 17 of 33 passes for 234 yards with 3 TDs. Carson caught 8 passes for 139 yards with 3 TDs. On defense, Dalton Beaver and Will Atkins had 11 tackles each
