Ocracoke considers fireworks show for 1st time since tragedy

OCRACOKE, NC (AP) — County commissioners will vote next week on whether to hold a fireworks show on Ocracoke Island for the first time since an explosion killed four people in 2009.

The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk, Virginia, reported officials say the Ocracoke occupancy tax board has agreed to finance a $20,000 fireworks display by Pyrotecnico of South Carolina. The tax board oversees spending of the meal and lodging taxes collected on the island.

Sundae Horn is director of tourism for the Ocracoke Civic and Business Association. She says fireworks would be launched Sunday, July 3, from the National Park Service parking lot located at the end of N.C. Highway 12 near town. The company already was booked for July Fourth.

Hyde County commissioners will vote Monday on the tax board’s decision.
