Hammerheads release preseason soccer schedule

WILMINGTON, NC (HAMMERHEADS) — Wilmington Hammerheads FC announced their 2016 preseason schedule this afternoon, featuring the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, UNCW and the Charleston Battery.

“Our preseason goal is to build a winning mentality,” said Head Coach Mark Briggs. “Preseason is an essential part of the season, it’s all about preparation and making sure every player is finely tuned and ready for the opening game. Games are an important part of a player’s preparation and with the off-season break being so long it is important we get the players back up to full speed.”

The Hammerheads will kick off the preseason against the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on Sunday, February 28 at 3:00 p.m. at WRAL Soccer Park. This match is open to the public and free to attend.

The team will then travel to two North Carolina Universities for its next matches. Wingate University will host the Hammerheads on Wednesday, March 2 at 4:00 p.m., followed by a match at Elon University on Saturday, March 5. From there the team will travel to MUSC Health Stadium to take on The Charleston Battery on Wednesday, March 9. There will be an inner squad game on Saturday, March 12 at 11:00 a.m. at the Cape Fear Regional Soccer Park, followed by a match at Coastal Carolina on Tuesday, March 15.

Wilmington will close out their preseason on Friday, March 18 as they host University of North Carolina Wilmington at 7:00 p.m. at Legion Stadium. This match is open to the public free of cost.

“I’m excited by our preseason schedule,” said Briggs. “We will play a great mix of college teams as well as professional teams. All of our games have been selected to provide a competitive environment for our players”

The USL will release the 2016 regular season schedule on Tuesday, January 26 at 1 p.m.
