Deputy credited with saving woman with heroin antidote
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office says issuing a narcotic overdose antidote to its patrol deputies has already saved a life.
The Sheriff’s Office started issuing naloxone kits to patrol officers in November 2015 and training them how to administer the medication that helps reverse the effects of a overdose of narcotics.
Today the Sheriff’s Office says that when a deputy gave naloxone to a woman who had overdosed on heroin in December, it reversed the effects of the overdose, and she regained consciousness. According to a news release, the woman was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center for her recovery.
“This proves that the naloxone program is extremely beneficial, and we will continue to expand our program throughout the entire Sheriff’s Office,” Sheriff Ed McMahon said in a statement.
