CFCC men and women will play for conference titles on Saturday

In search of a third straight Region 10 Championship, the Cape Fear Community College men’s basketball team took one step closer to achieving its goal as the top-seeded Sea Devils used a big push in the first half to break away from No. 5 Clinton Junior College following a 94-67 victory in Pinehurst on Friday afternoon.
“I’m real proud of our effort and execution today,” said CFCC Coach Ryan Mantlo. “We look forward to going into battle tomorrow in the hopes of bringing home a title.”
Cape Fear took a double-digit advantage with seven minutes to go in the opening period and went on a 7-2 spurt in the waning seconds of the frame to grab a 46-31 lead at the break. Sophomore guard Michael Chambers paced a balanced scoring effort, scoring 12 of his game-high 20 points during the early run.
A couple of shots from beyond the arc extended the Sea Devils cushion to 73-52 with 6:53 remaining as Cape Fear grabbed a three game season sweep over Clinton Junior College. Josh Lindsey drained five treys in the contest to close with 18 points as six players finished in double figures.
Tyrek Coger picked up the scoring in the second half and closed with 14 points, while Alonzo Tyson chipped in with 13.
With a chance to clinch a spot in the National Junior College Championship (NJCAA), the Sea Devils compete in the Region 10 Title game against Spartanburg Methodist at 3:30 p.m. in Pinehurst on Saturday. Cape Fear split a pair of regular season contests against Spartanburg, dropping their final home game of the year, 110-80, to the Pioneers on Feb. 20.
Women’s basketball
No. 1 Cape Fear CC 79 No. 4 Brunswick CC 43
With a number one seed in the Region 10 Tournament and opening round bye after cruising through its regular season schedule, the Cape Fear Community College women’s basketball team blew past No. 4 Brunswick Community College in a 79-43 result in Bolivia on Friday night.
Coming off a 47 point performance for the Lady Dolphins in game one of the event, the Sea Devils clamped down on Brunswick’s all-time leading scorer Brianna Baham.
Cape Fear extended its winning streak to 24 straight, improving to 24-1 overall and 6-0 at neutral sites this season.
The Sea Devils look to earn a spot in the national tournament for the first time in program history when Cape Fear returns to the floor on Saturday. The Sea Devils faces the winner of Guilford Tech and Louisburg College in the Region 10 Finals at 2 p.m. at Brunswick Community College. Cape Fear swept both opponents during the regular season.
