Fort Bragg troops must obey DOD rules for political activity

FAYETTEVILLE, NC (AP) — Donald Trump is bringing his presidential campaign to Fayetteville on Wednesday, and officials at Fort Bragg are reminding active duty troops of the rules concerning political activity for members of the military.

The Fayetteville Observer reports that troops are allowed to support candidates but must avoid any appearance of official Defense Department endorsement.

Active-duty military could face disciplinary action if they attend campaign events in uniform.

Fort Bragg spokeswoman Christina Douglas says while soldiers can have bumper stickers on their personal vehicles, troops living on base may not have yard signs or other political signs on their homes.

Douglas says those who identify themselves on social media as Defense Department employees must also state in political postings that their views are theirs alone and not those of the department.
