New Hanover County Planning Board greenlights 348 townhomes in Porters Neck
NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — More than 300 townhomes could be coming to a growing area of New Hanover County.
The New Hanover County Planning Board voted four to two to recommend approval of a rezoning request that would allow for a townhome development in Porters Neck.
The new neighborhood would sit on 33.54 acres near the Walmart on Market Street. It would have 348 single family townhomes.
Some residents in the area expressed concern over traffic, overcrowded schools, and connectivity.
The planning board did vote to recommend limiting vehicle connectivity at one entrance of the community, which is what developers and some residents wanted.
Craig Carlock, the chief operating officer at The Carroll Companies, is on the development team. He says they hope to be good neighbors moving forward.
“One of the big issues is the access to the roads and traffic patterns. We’ve taken on a number of things to mitigate traffic concern and actually improve traffic conditions in certain ways,” Carlock said. “The neighborhood is pleased with our efforts and I think the county is too.”
The rezoning will now go to the county commissioners for final approval. They are set to discuss it at the December 11 meeting.
