Drive a bit over the limit? NC says that’s too fast

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – Beginning Thursday, law enforcement across the state are cracking down on speeding — even if it’s just a couple miles over the speed limit.

The N.C. Governor’s Highway Safety Program said both state and local law enforcement are participating in its “Obey the Sign or Pay the Fine” campaign. Wilmington Police Traffic Unit Officer Adam Schwartzel thinks the new rules will save lives.

“Every mile you go over the speed limit, it’s that much longer to stop,” Schwartzel said. “Should a hazard come out in front of you, let’s say five miles over the speed limit, that increases your stopping distance 20 or 30 feet.”

Many drivers, like Branden Summers, believe going five or a few miles over the speed limit is harmless.

“Police pulling us over at five miles per hour, we’re not endangering lives,” Summers said. “There are people who fly by me when I’m going five over and they’re clearly going 15 over.”

Others believe it will pose a huge inconvenience for those pulled over.

“One mile over the speed limit could result in points on your license and increased expenses, and I just think this is not fair,” said resident Jay Kelly.

Schwartzel said that one mile could lead to a $200 fine.
