New Hanover County Landfill cuts ribbon on new Customer Convenience Center

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)– New Hanover County is making it easier for residents who have to take trash to the landfill.

The county introduced its new Customer Convenience Center on Monday.

The brand-new drop-off site offers a significant increase in space, and an increase in the number and types of materials that can be disposed of.

A new waste shredder has also been added, which will reduce the volume of waste placed in the landfill by 60%.

“If we can gain that much more additional space and save that space for some of the most toxic materials versus regular household garbage, that’s a much better use for this site than throwing things that are recyclable and reusable in there and wasting that space,” said Joe Suleyman, Recycling and Solid Waste Director of the NHC Landfill.

The county says the landfill has less than three decades of space left, so this technology will help buy additional time.

The site will be available for use starting next Monday at 6:30 am.
