Menorah lit to celebrate first night of Hanukkah in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Festival of Lights has officially begun.

The Chabad of Wilmington lit the menorah downtown on Thursday night to mark the first night of Hanukkah.

Two of the candles were lit. The one in the center, known as the shamash which is traditionally used to light the remaining candles, and the first branch.

People were able to enjoy traditional Hanukkah treats like potato latke and donuts.

Dozens of people came out to Market and Water Streets for the celebration.

Rabbi Moshe Lieblich says this year it is especially important for people to come out and celebrate the holiday.

“Because of what’s happening in Israel, there is rise of antisemitism in the country, and I think for Jewish people it’s very important to come out and be proud of who they are and to not be scared by it; to show that they’re not afraid,” Lieblich said. “Not only is [Hanukkah] about not backing down; it’s also about spreading a light and that’s primarily what it’s all about — you know, spreading light and goodness and kindness to the community. A little bit of light dispels a lot of darkness.”

The last night of Hanukkah is December 14.
