Biker killed in collision on Carolina Beach Road

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A man is dead after troopers say he was thrown from his motorcycle during a crash this weekend.

Sgt. Cannady with the Highway Patrol said it happened in the 4800 block of Carolina Beach Road around 5:30 Saturday evening.  He said the driver of a Jeep Wrangler, Dylan McCormick made a u-turn at the intersection of Riggs Trail. That’s when he said the driver collided with a motorcycle.

Cannady said the motorcycle driver, Lance Smith, tried to stop, but could not to stop in time. Smith was thrown from the motorcycle. He was taken to the hospital, but Cannady said he died shortly after getting there.

Cannady said McCormick was not injured. He was charged with a yield violation and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.
