10th Annual Pier to Pier swim race

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Saturday was the 10th Annual Pier to Pier swim race in Wrightsville beach. The course is 1.7 miles long starting at Crystal Pier ending at Johnnie Mercer’s Pier swimming into the current.

The fastest swimmer completed the race in 33 minutes. The race was for all ages. The oldest competitor was 87 years old and the youngest being only 11 years old.

Race Director Annie Sullivan said this was the first time in 5 years the race was sold out with over 400 contestants.

“It’s kind of a community thing. A lot of UNCW swimmers doing it and we have the whole US Naval Academy Women’s swim team out here,” said Sullivan.

The race is dedicated to the UNCW swimmer, Ryan Young, who passed away in 2009. Young coached for a Wilmington swim league team.
