Suspect shot, deputy injured during attempt to serve warrant

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – Authorities in Saluda County say a man was shot and wounded as sheriff’s deputies attempted to serve him with an arrest warrant. Officials say a deputy was injured.

Saluda County Deputy Tyler Scofield said deputies from Saluda and Lexington counties tried to serve the man around 4 p.m. Friday near the Lexington-Saluda County line.

Scofield said when deputies approached the suspect, he fled in a vehicle and hit an unmarked Saluda County sheriff’s vehicle with two deputies inside. Scofield said the deputies and the suspect exchanged gunfire, and the suspect was shot while inside the vehicle.

Scofield said the deputy’s injury wasn’t life-threatening, but wouldn’t say how he was hurt. The suspect’s condition wasn’t known.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating. The deputies involved are on administrative leave.
