ONLY ON 3: Brunswick County couple celebrates 71 years of marriage

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Geraldine and Julian Odom are celebrating 71 years of marriage today so we stopped in to learn what the couple’s secret is to such a long lasting relationship.

“We got married on June 2nd 1945. I was in the US Navy stationed in Wilmington,” said Julian.

But this couple almost wasn’t.

“I was dating his brother,” Geraldine said laughing. “I decided he was the better of the two.”

She said 71 years later she still knows she made the right call.

“We’ve always been together. We do things together. He’s an accountant and I can’t add two and two and get the right number,” Geraldine said.

They said they are the definition of the old phrase “opposites attract.”

“We’ve been together all these years and I don’t want it any other way,” Geraldine said.

The pair tell us they will be celebrating the milestone with a dinner out with family tonight.
