SEE IT: USCG rescue fisherman off NC coast

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY/USCG) — The Coast Guard has released video of a rescue of a man from a fishing boat off Corolla.

Watchstanders at the Sector North Carolina Command Center in Wilmington received a request for assistance at about 1:30 p.m., Monday, for an ailing man aboard a 37-foot sport fishing boat about 34 miles east of Corolla.

Officials say a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew overheard the call and diverted from a training mission to respond.

As you can see in the video, the aircrew lowered a rescue swimmer to the boat and hoisted the man to the helicopter. He was flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk where he is reported to be in stable condition.

“Anyone with medical considerations should remember to consult with his or her physician before heading offshore and if prescribed medication to bring extra,” said Capt. Patricia Hill, Sector North Carolina Commander. “Complications from diabetes, asthma, and allergic reactions are just a few common examples of medical issues that could arise when people head to sea. We strongly encourage our maritime public to be prepared for these possibilities.”
