New moped insurance law starts July 1
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — There will soon be some new laws for North Carolina drivers and moped owners.
In January, a new law required mopeds to be registered, but now they need something else.
As of right now, mopeds are not required to be insured like every other car on the road.
“They don’t necessarily follow the standard rules of other vehicles,” Performance Cycles Owner Joe Petersen said. “They tend to skirt around them a little bit.”
Petersen said it is concerning, especially, if a moped gets into an accident with car.
“Our insurance has to pick it up as an uninsured, so premiums go up, they’re not held responsible for damages they do,” Petersen said.
On July 1, House Bill 148 will change that requiring all moped owners to carry liability insurance.
“I think it’s only fair being that they are using the same roads that we’re using with automobiles, motorcycles, trucks that are paying the highway usage tax, that are paying insurance premiums,” Petersen said.
If you do not get your moped insured, your license plate will be revoked.
“It’s about time they got around to paying for the use that they are actually using.”
That is not the only new law on the roads. Click here to see the full list.
