What the NCDOT has learned and improved on after one week of Cape Fear Memorial Bridge repair work
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It’s been one week since repair work started on the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge and a lot has been done to keep traffic moving on both sides of the river.
Perhaps the most noticeable change has been more signs placed along roads, from detour signs to travel time signs showing drivers how long it will take to get from one location to another.
But NCDOT assistant division maintenance engineer Jessi Leonard said the biggest improvement they’ve made is to signal timing.
“Any of the intersections that were impacted, that we were getting complaints, that we saw complaints, observed them,” Leonard said. “We would review those during morning and afternoon peak hours and then make adjustments in real time. And when I say adjustments, that means either increasing the green times for some movements or decreasing them for others.”
Leonard said the NCDOT welcomes comments so they can continue to make more adjustments and improvements to get traffic around the construction.
