UNCW hosts Southeast NC Regional Science Fair

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — UNCW hosted the Southeast Regional Science and Engineering Fair on Saturday.

The fair combined the best science fair projects in Southeastern North Carolina under one roof.

Elementary, middle, and high schools from across the Cape Fear were represented at the event, with the best in each division moving on to the North Carolina State Science Fair in March.

Logan Tamadon is a junior at Isaac Bear Early College High School. He presented his project on the use of mycelium fungus to break down plastic waste.

“Mircoorganisims, at least in my opinion, is the only true solution we have right now to solving this global issue that is plastic pollution,” Tamadon said.

Logan said he became interested in solving the issue of plastic pollution when a whale washed up on the shore of Wrightsville Beach after eating plastic in the ocean. He said since then, he’s decided to do something about it.
