Traffic stop leads to chase, drug and gun charges

A traffic stop turned into a police chase Saturday night in Wilmington. It happened when officers stopped a Cadillac at 12th and Greenfield Street around 11:45.

While officers were confirming the driver’s information, the car took off and eventually crashed into a utility pole near Dawson Street. The suspect, 35-year-old Lakeem Ellis, got out of the car and ran.

Officers caught him and say they found four bags of marijuana on him, as well as a handgun in the car. Ellis faces several charges, including possession of a firearm by a felon and speeding to elude arrest. He is in jail under a $50,000 bond.
