Candle causes Wilmington house fire overnight

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Saturday night the Wilmington Fire Department helped put out a house fire on 6th Street in Wilmington.

A fire spokesman said crews found  moderate smoke showing from the front door at 1016 S. 6th Street.  Fire crews found  a small amount of fire once entering the home. The spokesman said the bulk of the fire had been knocked down by Wilmington Police using a garden hose from the exterior.  He said everyone made it out safely.

Officials said there was no power to the house and the occupant was using a candle by the window.  WFD Fire Investigators proved this to be a major factor in this accidental  fire.  The spokesman said the fire started by igniting curtains and blinds, before spreading to the window casing.  The home sustained damage estimated at  $5,000.

The American Red Cross is assisting the occupant and three children with temporary housing.
