Christians celebrate Palm Sunday to begin Holy Week

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)– Today is Palm Sunday, which marks the beginning of holy week for Christians.

Christians around the world celebrating through the tradition of waving palm branches.

The start of Christian Holy Week is marked by masses and processions in anticipation of Good Friday and Easter.

Reverend Phillip Craig of Saint James Episcopal Parish in Wilmington explains why it’s called “Palm Sunday”.

“Palm Sunday is given the name because we remember that on this day, in the tradition, Jesus came into Jerusalem and people waved palm branches, laid their cloaks and their clothes down before him so that he could enter into the city in this huge celebration,” said Craig.

Like so many churches this week, Reverend Craig says that Saint James has a number of events planned leading to the culmination on Sunday.
