Vigil honors life of Antonio Maultsby, Jr. as community seeks end to violence

CHADBOURN, NC (WWAY) — A call for justice and an end to violence as a community in the Cape Fear mourns the loss of a seven-year-old boy.

A candlelight vigil was held on Monday night at the Chadbourn Depot Museum to honor the life of Antonio Maultsby, Jr. More than a week ago, Maultsby was shot and killed at a home on Braswell Road. The shooting involved five other people, including a three-year-old.

The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office has released minimal details on the incident as the investigation continues.

Columbus County Sheriff Bill Rogers, Chadbourn Mayor Phillip Britt, Columbus County Commissioner Barbara Featherson shared remarks at the vigil. Before the closing prayer, Antonio’s mother and aunt thanked everyone for coming and for their continued support.

Theresa Flowers, Antonio’s cousin, is leaning on her faith to get through the devastating loss.

“This is hard. This is one of the hardest experiences I’ve ever had to deal with,” said Flowers. “This has really torn family up. This was one of the sweetest little fellas.”

A common theme at the vigil was calling for an end to violence in Chadbourn and greater Columbus County. Antonio’s 13-year-old cousin, Jamarion Lennon says the family is eagerly seeking justice.

“The violence has to stop. There should be no reason why a 7-year-old child should be shot over something that he should not have to deal with, something that he’s not even in,” said Lennon. “There has to be justice for this. It’s not right.”

Tristan Williams, Antonio’s seven-year-old cousin, says he is heartbroken.

“We used to tell stories to each other. We used to play together. He was loyal to me. He was like my brother,” said Williams. “I just miss Antonio.”

A celebration of life is being held for Antonio at the Brunswick-Waccamaw Missionary Association Building at 2 pm on Tuesday, March 26.
