Team of the Week: Laney Buccaneers

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – Laney is the WWAY-Farm Bureau Insurance Team of the Week. The Buccaneers defeated Rose 14-13 last Friday. Check out our presentation from Buctown!

Rose High School appears to be one of the best high school football teams in the state. They made it to the 4-A state finals last year, but the Rampants lost their 2016 opener despite leading Laney at halftime 13-0.

“We were a little down, but we kept saying the game is not over,” Laney senior Kymel Bloodworth told WWAY on Wednesday. ” We kept pushing to try to overcome the adversity to achieve our goal.”

The second half belonged to Laney though. The Laney defense came up big pitching a shutout after the break. Laney’s offense came up with second half touchdowns.
“We’re definitely building a lot of confidence off of it,” Laney senior Cayman Czesak said. “It shows us what we can do and what we’re capable of. We’re still getting better and it motivates us to go to practice every day.”

Sophomore quarterback Sherod Sidbury scored the game winner in the 4th quarter to cap off the road victory. It was a 14-13 come from behind feel good team of the week win. “We were able to finish and come back,” Laney head coach Ashaad Yeoman said. “In the past mentally I don’t know if we would have been able to do that, so that’s a positive that we’re going in the right direction.
