Man accused of threatening police, pointing gun at officers from window arrested by WPD

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A man has been arrested for allegedly barricading himself in a home and threatening police early Monday morning.

Police say they responded to the 1000 block of 43rd Street in reference to a verbal disturbance, noticing a man had barricaded himself inside and was acting erratic and shouting threats.

Officers say they heard the racking of a firearm and observed the suspect pointing a gun in the direction of officers from inside the window. A WPD officer fired a round towards the suspect resulting in a non-life-threatening injury.

“While they were there, Mr. Yates was observed in a window pointing the gun at a position that an officer was in. The officer took a shot, Yates was wounded,” Lieutenant Greg Willett said.

Donald Yates, 26, ran out of the residence and was immediately taken into custody, according to police.

Yates has been charged with Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Law Enforcement Officer, Resist/Delay/Obstruct, and Possession of a Schedule I Narcotic. Impairment is also suspected in this case, according to police.

Additional charges may be forthcoming.

Yates is a convicted felon who was wanted out of South Carolina for a parole violation with the original charge being attempted murder.
