Funding for the project came from a donation by NASCAR Crew Member Danny “Chocolate” Myers and his wife Caron as a memorial to Caron’s daughter Brandy, who died from leukemia in 1987.

Several dignitaries were at the ribbon cutting ceremony including Carolina Beach Mayor Lynn Barbee, NC Senator Michael Lee, and New Hanover County Commissioners along with dozens of fourth graders eager to be the first to use the playground.

Caron said a playground is the perfect way to honor her daughter, who always wanted to spread joy.

“Brandy’s favorite Bible verse was Psalm 100, and it said ‘make a joyful noise,’” Caron said. “Well, what do you get when you’re at a playground except a lot of joyful noises out here? That’s what she would have loved.”

Brandy and her family were pivotal in establishing the National Bone Marrow Transplant Registry, which has saved the lives of more than 950,000 people.
