Pedestrian struck and killed in early-morning accident on US 17

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A Wilmington man was hit and killed while attempting to cross the road early Friday morning.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to the collision around 6:16 a.m. on US 17 near the southbound US 17 business on-ramp.

George Ellis Jr., 59, died on the scene.

A 2020 Ford Explorer was traveling south on the US17 Business on-ramp while Ellis was attempting to cross the roadway heading east across the on ramp, according to the Highway Patrol.

They say the driver of the Ford Explorer remained on scene to render aid and there will be no charges at this time.
