‘Support the Girls’ supporting flooded areas in NC

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — An organization that aims to support women all over the country is trying to lend a hand to the areas hit hard by flooding in Southeastern North Carolina.

Liz Marmaras started the first Support the Girls chapter in North Carolina last month. The organization collects bras and feminine hygiene products to donate to women who need them.

Marmaras said affiliate chapter around the country are trying to help North Carolina in a time of need. She said affiliates in Washington D.C., New Jersey, Colorado, and Indiana are sending her boxes filled with a total of 2,600 tampons and maxi pads to donate to Lumberton and Fair Bluff. Both towns are under water after major flooding.

“I sat and watched on tv in horror at the flooding and wanted to help through the Support the Girls initiative,” Marmaras said. “I figured these women and girls are homeless. Who flees with hygiene products?”

Marmaras said she contacted the creator of Support the Girls, Dana Marlowe from the D.C. area. She said without hesitation, Marlowe put together boxes of products and so did other affiliates.

Marmaras said she found a woman on Facebook who is collecting the items on behalf of her church. Marmaras said the boxes were sent out today and she hopes to get them next week. The church will then deliver the items to Fair Bluff and Lumberton.
