Construction begins at Legion Stadium to replace synthetic turf

The project will cost $690,000 with the city, county and school district splitting the costs equally at $230,000.

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) – Construction began this week at legion stadium off Carolina Beach Road to install new synthetic turf on the football field.

In October, The Legion Stadium Commission voted unanimously for the replacement.

The project will cost $690,000 to the city, county, and school district to be split evenly.

The previous turf was installed in the spring of 2011 and given and eight-to-ten-year lifespan.

The City of Wilmington says they were able to pass that original timeline with enhanced maintenance by the city’s athletics facility staff – being brushed every 6-8 weeks and aerated once a month.
