Planning Commission denies proposal for student housing development

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Dozens came out tonight wearing red to fight against a student housing development that could bring more than five hundred people to Oleander Drive. The planning commission agreed.

The commission unanimously denied the complex from moving into what is now the Oleander Golf Center. The proposed development would cater specifically to college students and rent out bedrooms individually.

Those who spoke out tonight voiced concerns over things like noise, trash, and other disruptions that could come from having so many young people in one area.

“It’s great. We love it. I’m so excited but it’s not over. From what I understand there’s a subdivision review board, so everything that happened here has to happen again,” said concerned community member Stephen Cuthbert.

Cuthbert said they will continue to fight for their neighborhood for the lifespan of the college housing proposal.
