Bladen teens learn the ropes of firefighting

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Bladen County firefighters say they have a shortage of volunteers. So they’re volunteering their time to train teens.

Along with learning how to put their gear on in a hurry, the junior cadets spend the two weeks at First Due Firefighter Camp getting CPR certified. They also learn about search and rescue, the ins and outs of the truck, and how to use the jaws of life.

“Since I was very little, actually, I’ve always wanted to be a firefighter and the instructors at this camp have really helped me,” junior cadet James Bradshaw said. “They’ve helped me improve a lot and it’s like a big family. I like them all.”

The cadets are already junior members of fire departments in Bladen County. After they graduate from camp next Friday, they will be able to do everything except enter a burning building.
