Adopt-a-Cop reaches out to family of officer shot in Leland

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — The community is coming together to help Officer Jacob Schwenk and his family through this difficult time all thanks to the Adopt-a-Cop program.

Tamie Keel who is an administrator of Adopt-a-Cop locally said since the incident they have raised more than $4,000 for the family. She said right now it’s just about doing whatever it takes to make things easier for the Schwenk’s.

The Town of Leland does not allow the program to give gifts to officers so the program is going around that policy by presenting all the money and support to Schwenk’s wife and young son.

“We recognize this blue line is very strong. It is a brotherhood. And when one hurts, all of us hurt. And even with this you know again Adopt-a-Cop came to the recognition right out the gate,” Keel said.

She adds this incident has given the program a renewed passion to fight to get Adopt-a-Cop approved by the town so all officers know they have the support of their community behind them.
