Quick response saves mans life near Masons Inlet

A day on the water nearly turned deadly for a man boating near Masons Inlet in New Hanover County.

According to the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, a man was preparing his boat for the day when he accidentally dropped his anchor and fell into the water with it.

The sheriff’s office reported that the man struck the propeller, severing his femoral arteries.

The incident occurred on the south end of Figure Eight Island.

At the north end of Wrightsville Beach, Epic Excursions a boat rental company, heard the call for help and quickly responded to ferry over first responders.

Ian Balding, co-owner of Epic Excursions, expressed relief that they were nearby to assist.

“We happened to be out on a charter in the right place at the right time to help. Our captains are all trained in first aid and response as U.S. Coast Guard Master Captains, so they are prepared to assist in any way they can,” Balding said.

Several other emergency responders and Good Samaritans also aided in the response.

Balding received an update on the man’s condition and was informed that he is expected to make a full recovery.

We have reached out to other first responders and the boater’s family but have not heard back.

The man’s wife posted on social media, expressing gratitude to the bystanders and first responders.
