911 calls, radio traffic released in Leland police officer shooting
LELAND, NC (WWAY) — The newly released 911 calls and radio traffic from an officer involved shooting describe a frantic scene in Leland Friday.
As neighbors called 911, law enforcement tried to piece together what was happening over the radio traffic when Leland Police Officer Jacob Schwenk was shot.
Around 8:30 Friday night, Brunswick County dispatch receives this 911 call from Bridgeport Way in Leland.
911 caller: “Obviously, we’ve got a drunk individual driving. He’s all over the road. He’s running up on the sidewalk. He’s knocking down mailboxes and everything.”
Dispatch: “What kind of car?”
911 caller:”All I know is it’s white.”
Then, that report comes in over the radio traffic.
“Just received a call from a female advised a white Yukon,” an officer said over the radio.
Just moments later, neighbors in the Windsor Park subdivision start calling 911.
“There is shooting out here,” the 911 caller said. He’s way down in the back by himself.”
“Is this for the drunk driver call?” dispatch said.
“Yes he’s all over the place,” the 911 caller said.
Then, the caller said she sees and officer coming.
“There is shooting everywhere,” the 911 caller said.
Another neighbor called.
“I’m in Windsor Park in Leland and we just heard gunshots and we just heard somebody say officer down,” the 911 caller said.
Meanwhile, this comes in on the radio traffic.
“An officer has just been shot,” an officer said over the radio.
Police say it was officer jacob schwenk.
“Can you advise his condition?”
“He’s talkin,'” an officer said over the radio. “That’s about all I can do right now.”
Investigators said the suspect was Brent Quinn.
“Suspect is down at this time, officer has been shot in the leg,” an officer said over the radio.
Quinn died in the shooting. Police say Schwenk was also shot in the chest, but he was wearing a bullet proof vest.
Police say Schwenk underwent surgery and is expected to be okay. As to what exactly led up to the shooting, the State Bureau of Investigation is still investigating.
According to the Town of Leland, they are paying all of Schwenk’s medical expenses and his full salary will remain intact during his treatment and recovery.
