WPD cracks down on illegal turns at downtown fountain
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — There’s a temptation in the air around 5th and Market Street in Wilmington. A temptation to turn left. And it’s illegal.
Police were out in full force Friday watching for anyone who made left turns around the landmark fountain at the intersection. Police say it’s just not safe, because the fountain sits right in the middle of the street. Drivers cannot see around it to make left turns, which is why signs are posted telling drivers not to make the turn.
“In the past we’ve investigated quite a few bad wrecks here, and we’re trying to let people know this is a dangerous intersection, and we have identified it as a dangerous intersection and we’re gonna do something about it,” Ofc. J.D. Smith said.
The penalty for making a left at 5th and Market is $25 plus court costs.
