VOTE 2010: UNCW students create online voter guide
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — One week till Election Day. Candidates are trying to make their message heard loud and clear in the final stretch. Some UNCW students are trying to help them out.
VoteILM2010.com is a website created by Seahawk students. It is dedicated to helping voters in New Hanover County get to know the candidates and the issues.
The website is a non-partisan election guide for the wilmington and new hanover area. It features candidate profiles and even details about where they stand on issues.
The site was developed by students in the Communication Studies Department at UNCW. Political Communications instructor Jennifer Brubaker, who helped students with the site, says the goal is to get people informed.
“My biggest concern with encouraging citizens to vote is just encouraging them to vote and stopping at that, and unfortunately often times I feel like that’s what get out the vote campaigns do, and sometimes it stops short of making sure they are knowledgeable voters,” Brubaker said.
Brubaker said the site also makes sure to address what each elected official’s role is.
