Woody White hammers 84 Lumber for controversial Super Bowl ad

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — If you watched the Super Bowl Sunday night, you might have seen a commercial that is generating quite a buzz.

It was from 84 Lumber. Now New Hanover County Commission Chairman Woody White is sharing his thoughts.

The spot features a Spanish-speaking mother and daughter who leave their home and walk for days to reach the US. At the end the pair discover a border wall and then a door. The message after the door open says “the will to succeed is always welcome here.”

White took to Facebook during the game to express his opinions toward the commercial:

“We know what we saw,” White said. “We saw a lady and her child navigating the uncertain terrain of illegally coming to the country instead of having her at a office setting filling out immigration papers and following what the law allows her and her family to do legally to get into this country. I just thought it was a very poor taste and that’s my opinion.”

White’s post comes just weeks after he took on actress and comedienne Whoopi Goldberg on social media about her criticism of President Donald Trump and her performance this summer at Cape Fear Community College’s Wilson Center.

“I was very clear on what I said,” White said. “In America you can say something and anyone can disagree and that’s the beauty of our country.”

84 Lumber has a store in Wilmington. White said he and his family plan on boycotting the business and doesn’t believe in the company’s philosophy.

We reached out to 84 Lumber and they refused to comment on the commercial.
