Perdue ready to veto voter i.d. measure

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Governor Bev Perdue sounds ready to veto a
measure heading to her desk that would require North Carolina
voters to show photo identification before casting a ballot.

Perdue spokeswoman, Chrissy Pearson, said late Thursday the voter
ID measure given final approval by the General Assembly earlier in
the day isn’t in a form the governor can support. Pearson said the
governor believes elected officials should encourage voting, not
discourage it.

A veto would appear to stick. The House and Senate approved the
ID bill along party lines, which means the House is a handful of
votes short of the margin needed to override Perdue.

The legislation requires a person to show one of eight forms of
photo ID. Otherwise, the person must file a provisional ballot.
