Dangerous conditions prompt beach warnings in Oak Island

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Hazardous conditions continue at many area beaches, days after Debby made its way through Southeastern North Carolina.

On Monday, Oak Island upgraded its Beach Warning Flag status to “yellow”.

The decision comes after several water rescues were performed over the last few days.

The most recent incident happened on Monday. when the Ocean Rescue Unit responded to a call where two beachgoers used a Water Safety Station rescue tube to assist a swimmer in distress. All three people (The victim and two good Samaritans) were recovered by an ORU swimmer.

On Sunday, crews were called to the beach access area in the 100 block of W. Beach Drive. Several people, including 3 juveniles and 1 adult were rescued from a very strong current in rough surf conditions.

The Yellow Flag beach warning is in effect until further notice, along with a Swimming Advisory due to water quality concerns.
