WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Two people are in custody in the Columbus County Jail after a multi-county car theft, police pursuit, and standoff.

It began Saturday in Wilmington. Wilmington Police say a man stole a woman’s purse at the Food Lion on Independence Boulevard and got into a getaway car that drove off.

After a police chase, the car wrecked near Bolton. The suspects then allegedly stole another vehicle that didn’t have much gas.

A Lake Waccamaw Police officer spotted the stolen vehicle at a gas station around 9:00 p.m. leading to a chase through a swampy area.

The suspects hid in the woods from the police overnight.

The next day David Wayne Henry, 19, was found sitting outside a store in Lake Waccamaw, covered in mosquito bites. He was arrested without incident.

Another officer found Keko Kenya Somers-Williams, 19, along U.S. 74, attempting to wave down vehicles. An off-duty Lake Waccamaw Police officer spotted Somers-Williams and called for backup, which led to his arrest.

Henry is charged with Resisting Public Officer, Possess stolen motor vehicle, Resisting Public Officer, Aid and Abet Larceny.

Somers-Williams is charged with Resisting Public Officer, Flee/Elude Arrest, Possession of Stolen Motor Vehicle, Fail to Heed Light or Siren, No Operators License, Speeding, Reckless Driving with Wanton Disregard, Fail to Wear Seatbelt, Fail to Stop for Sign/Flashing Red Light., Fail to Maintain Lane Control.
