Wilmington community gathers for Overdose Awareness Day

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Coastal Horizons’ Quick Response Team, in partnership with the City of Wilmington, hosted the 3rd Annual Overdose Awareness Day Event.

Held at Hope Recovery Church on Winston Boulevard, the free public event aimed to honor lives lost to overdose and promote recovery.

The event, provided a supportive space for individuals affected by substance abuse to connect and find comfort. It also highlighted the resources available for those in need.

Jason Black, Director of Programming for Quick Response, spoke about the event’s mission:

“People often aren’t aware of the resources available to them or what’s happening with their neighbors. Bringing light to these issues helps individuals come out of the shadows and seek the support they need.”

Attendees explored various resources designed to assist them or their loved ones facing substance abuse challenges.

The event united people from all walks of life with a shared goal of prevention.

New Hanover County Sheriff Sgt. Gene Moore emphasized the importance of knowing that help is available:

“Knowing that there is a place to turn to can make a world of difference. The sheriff’s office and organizations like this want everyone to understand that they are not alone and help is available.”

Billy McGowan, Re-Entry Services Director at Coastal Horizons, shared his personal journey and motivation for staying clean:

“I want to be a better person, father, husband, and citizen. Speaking at events like this is crucial because it allows us to recover out loud, giving a voice to those who are suffering in silence.”

Though Overdose Awareness Day is observed on August 31st, the fight against substance abuse continues every day.

This event serves as a reminder that support is always available for those struggling with addiction.
