Hoggard family reacts to death of Raymond Kain
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The reaction of the students and parents were the same today at Hoggard High School today, shock and sadness, following the death of student Raymond Kain. This as the investigation into what happened to Kain continues.
“I thought it was very upsetting because to think that a student from Hoggard High School had been killed was very upsetting and shocking.” Student Shaun Gizdic said.
Students at Hoggard High school describe their reaction to the news one of their own died.
“Wilmington has always been a great place and it should be safe and to know that such a young person had been killed is just tragic.” Gizdic added.
Police responded to Sebrell Avenue around eleven Thursday night after reports that a body was lying in the road. They first believed the victim was hit by a car. This 911 call describes the chilling find.
Caller: “Looks like somebody might have done this to this guy, instead of a car hitting him.”
Police later identified the victim as 17 year old Raymond Kain and ruled his death a homicide.
“I’m just like, this is supposed to be a safe place of learning,” Student Jackson Byrnes said. “If there are shootings going on around here then how are we supposed to know that any of us are safe?”
“It pains me to hear it every time I hear it, but I guess I’m an optimist about living life,” Parent Debbie Todd said. “You have to go on and live your life. I think we can protect our children as best as we possibly can and keep them out of dangerous situations, but school shouldn’t be one of them.”
Hoggard is still offering grief counselors to staff or students who need it. Police are still investigating into Kain’s death, if you have any information, please contact the Wilmington Police Department.
