Wilmington mom welcomes baby girl, lost toddler in accident

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) —  Last November, the Williams family had their life turned upside down. 2-year-old Mason Richardson was killed in a suspected DWI accident near the Independence Mall.

His mom Alexandria Williams was pregnant at the time and she just welcomed a baby girl.

“Her name Addison Mae Williams,” Williams said. “We call her ‘Addy Mae’. May is from Mason because we called Mason ‘Mae Mae.'”

She was born on March 5 weighing only 5 pounds and 14 ounces.

She says it was a bittersweet feeling as only four months ago Williams lost Mason.

“Nothing will ever heal it,” Williams said. “Even driving by the mall is always a constant reminder so nothing will make that pain go away. I just try to find positive things I can do in his honor.”

Williams plans to fill a chest with mason’s items so Addison will know who he was and how he died. One item is a quilt.

“I went through all his shirts that I always have pictures of him in that way I could be like you know this is when we here and there, you know just memories,” Williams said. “This is my most prized possession of my Mason.”

Williams has experienced the worst and the best of being a parent. She says her family support has been what has gotten her through it all.

“I have a piece of my Mae here with me and that is my Addy,” Williams said.

Wilmington Police say Jonathan Alexander Hayes is responsible for the crash and was charged for second degree murder. Hayes has been in jail 13 times prior to this incident.
