18-month-old killed in accident involving Carolina Beach Police officer

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) —  A young child was killed Tuesday night in an accident involving a Carolina Beach Police officer, according to NC Highway Patrol.

The accident happened at 6:49 p.m. when Officer Colby Edens was leaving 926 Kiwi Lane in his patrol car, according to Trooper J.E. Ballard.

18-month-old Lucas Marcincko reportedly darted out in front of the patrol car as it was pulling forward near the house.

A 911 operator said in a radio traffic call, “It’s going to be 926 Kiwi Lane in reference to a cardiac arrest. Male subject advising he has run over his child.”

“We’re on our way,” an officer responded.

Edens was tested for impairment and was found to not be under the influence of any sort, according to Trooper Ballard.

The relationship between the child and Edens has not yet been confirmed.
