Honoring Service: Veterans collaborate to renovate home

SUPPLY, NC (WWAY) — World War II and Korean War veteran John Fryar has lived in North Carolina for over 35 years and is known for his fiercely independent spirit. However since he is 96 years old and is unfortunately losing his sight, maintaining his home has become increasingly difficult.

In response, several veteran legions, including Posts 550 and 543, stepped in to help. In collaboration with Solstice Builders, who sent all their employees last Monday, the renovation project that was expected to take three weeks was completed in less than one.

The renovations included new carpet, a new front porch, a back ramp, and a fully accessible bathroom for John and his walker.

John expresses his gratitude, stating, “What the American Legion has done here at my house is a godsend for me. Because in my condition, there’s no way in the world I could’ve ever afforded it to start with. I just want everyone in our county to know that if veterans, or maybe not veterans, need something, call on them and I am sure they would be there to help. So many people do need things; they just don’t know to get it, which I didn’t until I met Steve.”

These renovations were provided at no cost to John, thanks to the collective efforts of various veteran legions, Solstice Builders, and other sponsors, with the county assisting with permits.
