New recreation complex in Surf City to receive new amenities next year

SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) — A recently opened recreation complex in Surf City is getting lots of use from the community, but new additions to the park are still coming.

The Earl G. and Inez Batts Recreation Complex opened October 5 with a new inclusive playground, and the first skate park in the area. The park is currently wrapping up Phase one of the project.

Phase two is set to begin in early 2025, which will add two multi-purpose fields with lighting.

Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Director Jodi Shepard said the park is built so that new phases can be added in the future.

“We are actually in the process of updating our master plan for the community right now, so that’s really going to be our guiding light as to what these future phases can be,” Shepard said.

The new recreation complex began construction back in April.
