Whiteville man charged in deadly Columbus shooting

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A weekend shooting in Columbus County has left a woman dead, and a man facing murder charges.

According to the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a shooting call Saturday night in the 100 block of Elizabeth Street, near Whiteville.

When deputies arrived, they found 30-year-old Brandi Alexis Scott unresponsive with a gunshot wound. Emergency responders attempted lifesaving measures, but Scott was pronounced dead at the scene.

During the investigation, detectives determined 71-year-old Fredrick Smith was the suspect. Smith is believed to be Brandi Scott’s boyfriend.

Smith was arrested and is charged with Murder.

He’s being held in the Columbus County Detention Center under no bond.
