Man charged in deadly Walmart shooting makes first court appearance
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — We’re learning more about a deadly shooting that happened at the Walmart in Monkey Junction over the weekend. The man charged in connection with that shooting made his first court appearance in New Hanover County Monday.
35-year-old Dean Michael Newman of Carolina Beach was arrested and charged with First Degree Murder in connection to the death of Mark Thomas Paz.
The shooting happened just before 6:00 pm Saturday, when several Walmart employees were trying to stop Newman from shoplifting. During the ensuing fight, Paz was shot and later died.
On Monday, flowers could be found outside of the north entrance to the store. The Walmart location will remain closed until Tuesday at 9 am.
The family of Mark Paz started a GoFundMe to help cover funeral costs.
