Wilmington Symphony Orchestra kicking off 2019-20 season with Brahms and More concert
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The opening night for the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra’s 2019-2020 season will feature a Brahms and More concert on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Wilson Center.
WSO Conductor Steven Errante appeared on Good Morning Carolina to talk more about the performance and other planned concerts for the upcoming season.
Errante has been the conductor of the WSO and a member of the UNCW Department of Music faculty since 1986.
Brahms and More will feature Mozart’s Overture to The Impresario with energy and lyricism featuring six different themes.
Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme, Op. 33, was originally written for the German cellist Wilheim Fitzenhagen. The season opening concert will also feature guest artist cellist, Sterling Elliott.
Elliott has soloed with New York Philharmonic, The Cleveland Orchestra, The New World Symphony and so many more. He even performed for cellist Yo-Yo Ma and performed aside recording artist Jennifer Hudson. He is the 2019 1st place winner for the Sphinx Competition in Detroit aimed at the encouragement, development and recognition of classical music talent in the Black and Latino communities. In addition he won the 1st place in the Sphinx Junior Division in 2014, 2nd place in Junior Division in 2013, and Semi Finalist in the Junior Division in 2012. At 19, he studied at the Julliard School working toward an undergraduate degree in cello performance.
He will also be doing a residency the week of September 17 – 21. During the week, he will be performing at Williston Middle School, Minnie Evans Theatre, Lunch Music at CAM on Friday, DREAMS and more.
While individual seats for the 2019-2020 concert season are available, season subscriptions can only be purchased until September 21.
The MASTERWORKS SERIES for all 5 concerts starts at $68 and the POPS SERIES for both pops start at $50. Individual ticket prices start at $17 for MASTERWORKS and $25 for POPS.
The first POPS Concert for the season will be ARETHA: A TRIBUTE featuring vocalists Capathia Jenkins and Ryan Shaw and will be held Saturday, October 19, 7:30 pm.
