Why more people are decking the halls safely this holiday season
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — For the past 4 years, Vinedresser Lawn and Landscaping has helped homeowners in the Cape Fear deck the halls by installing their outdoor Christmas lights.
Breanne Marshall is a manager at the Wilmington-based company.
She said they started doing this to drum up business in what’s typically a slower time of the year for landscapers.
“We did it to extend our season,” Marshall said. “We don’t like to lay off our guys, we know everyone has families and bills so we like to extend the season of the guys. I mean, obviously it helps the company, but we like to help out the guys as well.”
Unfortunately, falls from a ladder are part of too many people’s holidays.
That’s why Greg Viehman said he’s decided to stop stringing up lights himself.
“A lot of people get hurt on roofs so I wouldn’t recommend anyone go up there,” Viehman said. “One slip and you know, you could be in big trouble. So let the professionals do it. They do a great job, you know, they’re using all LEDs now, its low voltage to your house, its very, very convenient.”
If you are decorating your home with lights, here are three things to remember.
One, never overreach on a ladder.
Two, if you’re using an extension or straight ladder, make sure the base is well secured and the top of the ladder is leaning against a solid surface.
And third, always make sure someone is on the ground, holding the base of the ladder while you’re on it.
Or, do as Viehman recommends, hire professional installers to do the work to prevent you from a fall or break that would turn your nice holiday display into a naughty experience.
