Affects of Irma causing rough waters in Pender County
SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) – Rough surf conditions have made it dangerous to be in the water in Pender County.
The surf has caused minor erosion on beachfront properties and even swept away dangerously large pieces of debris.
The sustained wind and gusts on Topsail Island are enough to lift small items in the water. We saw one family running down the beach to retrieve a pair of back porch stairs that were taken by the rough surf.
It’s large items like that, that have officials in Surf City asking people to not only stay out of the water, but also off of the beaches especially when we hit high tides.
“What we will see during the day is more and more impacts from debris floating in the ocean you certainly do not want to be out there in the water even up to your ankles and have that potential impact of a board flying by or something like that so we want to caution people to be safe,” says Surf City town manager Larry Bergman.
